Q&As
Why
was the DCPCU set up?
The nature of card crime means that
the police don't always have the resources to investigate these frauds
or to treat them as a priority. The creation of a dedicated police unit
has enabled a group of specialist officers to share their expertise with
local police forces and to concentrate on tackling the organised gangs
responsible for card fraud losses.
Does
the Unit get involved with cases outside of London?
Each
case is judged on its merits. Experience has shown that in the majority
of cases of cheque and payment card fraud, the crime groups that operate
throughout the country have links to London. However, the Unit does also
mount joint operations with other forces and will consider taking on cases
throughout mainland Britain, where relevant.
Who
pays for the DCPCU?
The
DCPCU is solely sponsored by the banking industry.
Is
the DCPCU a part of a particular force?
The
Unit is made up of officers from the Metropolitan and City of London police
forces. Both London forces provide resources and authorities to support
specific DCPCU operations and retain responsibility for their officers.
